Hakerem Community

Outreach

Our outreach to the community at large includes:

THE IRISIM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Our rabbi, Reuven Resnick, serves as rabbi of the school. Our members have recently become involved in school events, and are looking forward to volunteering as academic and social mentors in the coming year.

BEIT-GIL. We have a long-standing relationship with the Beit-Gil (AKIM) sheltered workshop for developmentally disabled adults. We traditionally celebrate both Chanukah and Purim together. This spring, our NOAM youth chapter organized a day-long excursion for the Beit-Gil associates.

THE NOF KARMIEL RETIREMENT HOME. Kehilat Hakerem and Nof Karmiel discovered each other in 2005, when our beloved member Joe Flaum became a resident at Nof Karmiel. Even though Joe passed away in January 2009, our staff and membership continue to lead holiday events for the residents.

THE KEF LI AVIV CENTER for individuals with physical or emotional special needs (link). Rabbi Resnick leads discussions at the center about Judaism in the modern world.

OUTREACH TO DRUZE AND ARAB COMMUNITIES

Kehilat Hakerem has a long-standing relationship with the Christian-Arab community of Kfar Yasif. The two communities have enjoyed joint activities which include an educational weekend together on the banks of the Kinneret. During the 2008-2009 school year, Rabbi Resnick and a number of volunteers from the congregation gave weekly English lessons at the local “Bishop Timothy” church school.

Rabbi Resnick has also begun extending our hand to Druze and Muslim communities. He has established a friendly relationship with Sheykh Nasib Ganim, the spiritual leader of the Druze village of Sajur, and with the Muslim Imam Ahmad Assadi of the Dir-al Assad village. Rabbi Resnick is a volunteer English teacher at the Sajur High School.
